EBRD / European Commission Special Event: Promoting Investment and Improving Living Standards in the Western Balkans through European Integration

2019 will be pivotal for the future of the European Union and will mark one year since the launch of the EU’s Western Balkans Strategy. Featuring senior representatives from EU member states and the European Commission as well as multilateral development banks and the media, this special event aims at exploring within an interactive format why and how European integration is an opportunity for increasing investments in the Western Balkans, how the actual scale and impact of FDI from EU member states and financing from the EU is perceived in this region and how the experience of the newest EU member states can be relevant for the people and countries in the Western Balkans.

Majlinda Bregu

Secretary General, Regional Cooperation Council

Majlinda Bregu is an Albanian politician and took office as the Secretary General of the Regional Cooperation Council in January 2019.

She was elected as Member of Parliament of Albania, as a Democratic Party member, for three consecutive legislatures (2005-2017). She has chaired the European Integration Committee of the Albanian Parliament and also chaired the National Council for European Integration, the highest consultative body on European integration in Albania. In 2004 she was appointed national coordinator of the country’s first National Gender Institute.

Majlinda has a Masters in Social and Political Science from the University of Tirana and a Ph.D in Sociology from the University of Urbino, Italy.

Christian Danielsson

Director General, European Commission, DG NEAR

Christian Danielsson is the Director-General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations at the European Commission.

He joined the European Commission in 1995 as a Member of the Cabinet of Commissioner Anita Gradin. His various positions at the Commission include Deputy Head of Cabinet of Vice-President Verheugen and Director in DG Enlargement. He was Permanent Representative for Sweden (2008-2010), before he became Deputy Secretary-General of the European Commission in 2011. In 2013 he became Director-General for Enlargement and since 2015 has held his current position.

Before joining the European Commission, Christian worked for the Swedish diplomatic service. He has a degree in Business Administration and Economics from the Stockholm School of Economics.

Pierre Heilbronn

Vice President, Policy & Partnerships, EBRD

Pierre Heilbronn is EBRD Vice President, Policy and Partnerships. He is a member of the EBRD’s Executive Committee leading on the Bank’s economic, policy and reform agenda, managing bilateral and multilateral donor partnerships and ensuring an inclusive engagement of civil society.

Before joining the EBRD in 2016, Pierre was Deputy Chief of Staff for France’s Minister of Economy and Finance. He also previously served as the European Adviser to the French Prime Minister and was acting General Secretary for European Affairs.

He is a graduate of Institut d’ Études Politiques de Paris and the École Nationale d’Administration (ENA), holds a Master of Economics (Cambridge University) and a Master of European Studies (College of Europe, Bruges).

Zdravko Marić

Minister of Finance, Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Croatia

Zdravko Marić has been Minister of Finance of the Republic of Croatia since January 2016.

He began his professional career in the scientific and academic field. After working at Zagreb’s Institute of Economics, he was invited by the then Minister of Finance in 2006 to become Assistant Minister for Macroeconomic Analysis and Planning. In 2008 he was promoted to the position of a State Secretary. His portfolio included international financial institutions and he headed the working group for Chapter 33 – Financial and Budgetary Provisions, which was the last closed chapter in the process of negotiations with the European Union.

Zdravko holds a Ph.D from the Zagreb Faculty of Economics and Business.

Tatjana Veselinović

Producer/Presenter, N1 TV

Tatjana Veselinović is a Serbian professional journalist with more than 20 years of experience in media, mainly television. She is currently a producer and anchor on the N1 regional TV news channel. She is currently renowned for the Infobiz show which covers a variety of economic topics and as the anchor of a daily talk show.

She began her career at BK TV where she worked as a reporter covering conferences, international summits and domestic political and economic events. One of the major milestones in her professional carrier was being part of and creating the first news channel in Serbia, B92 info. As a TV producer there she was responsible for covering world news.
